Holder to Testify on Fast and Furious Before House Committee

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) announced this week that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will testify on Feb. 2 before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee about his role in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ now-infamous “Operation Fast and Furious.”

Issa, who is chairman of the House committee, and Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) have led an ongoing investigation into the role of Holder and the Department of Justice in the operation.

Rumor Alert: Veterans’ Health and “Sporting Purposes” Among the thousands of questions NRA-ILA answers every month by email, phone and letter are scores that begin “This guy told me he heard …” Unfortunately, all too often this is the telltale sign of one of the rampant rumors that circulate around campfires or gun store counters, and especially on the Internet. Three of the most recent top rumors involve veterans’ gun rights, the status of the “sporting purposes” test for firearms importation, and new restrictions on gun shows.

Tom Clarke ATAC TV Viewer’s Firearm Question: Will a Plastic Gun get through X-ray?

Friday, January 6th, 2012

ATAC TV Firearm Reply and Answer:

Tom Clarke and Lenny Bolton with ATAC TV Firearm’s Q&A address this important question with a serious warning for those traveling with firearms.This is a great question, with a very clear answer.  NO! The gun will not get through an X-ray undetected.  And, taking the answer one step further: DO NOT TRY IT.

First of all it is illegal to carry a concealed firearm or weapon through an X-ray machine, whether it is in an airport or any other government building, without permission from the proper authorities.  This question specifically refers to carrying a GLOCK or similar type handgun through airport security.  Tom Clarke make is very clear:  Just because the gun (GLOCK, Springfield, etc.) is plastic or polymer, does not mean you can sneak it through security.  Nor does it give you the permission to sneak it through security.

Lenny Bolton also emphasizes the gun will show up in the X-Ray image.  Plain as day, the entire outline of the firearm, including the trigger guard, will show up in the monitor.  Even if you separate the metal slide, it will still show up.

There is a correct way to travel with your firearm.  Laws are always changing over time.  For example, in reference to airline security, you can always call or check online with TSA (http://www.tsa.gov/) and ask about procedures for traveling with your firearm.  It is important to also check the laws of your destination because laws are different from state to state, or country to country.  Look into the proper protocol for your travel.  If you’re declaring a firearm, you may have to sign a statement that your firearm is cleared out and properly stored.  It is very important to communicate with TSA and airport officials in this case!

Straight to the point: Just don’t do it.  It’s not going to work.  Follow the firearms laws, which are put in place to protect everyone.  It is illegal and the penalties are pretty severe.

The ATAC Staff appreciates your great questions!  Keep them coming!

ATAC TV: Four Step Dry Practice Handgun Presentation Training

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Start with unloading your handgun and to remove all ammo from the magazine and your pockets, we are going to do this dry. Even performing this without ammo, you must follow all the safety rules. Strating from the holster. (Where ever you carry it) These are the basic steps of the Presentation.  If you need to SEE the steps, go to ATAC Firearms channel and view the 1911 or Glock Presentation, Grip and Stance, and / or Sequence of Shooting Programs. Doesn’t matter which handgun; the steps are basic to all.

(DRY PRACTICE DRILLS SHOULD BE AT ¼ TO ½ YOUR NORMAL PRESENTATION SPEED!)

  • STEP 1 Eyes on TARGET, establish a firing grip on the handgun while in the holster, at the same time move support hand up to mid-line tight to your body as you focus on your target.
  • STEP 2 Handgun is drawn straight up, trigger finger is straight along the frame, (not on the trigger) as elbow drops down, rotating the muzzle toward target, anchor the butt of the handgun in a rib near your pectoral muscle, support hand in mid line of chest tight to your body. Bring the gun as high as you can and is still comfortable for you. Eyes are still on target. (This could be a shooting position, if needed, more on this in the advanced programs)
  • STEP 3 As Handgun is raised up toward your line of sight, support hand mates with firing hand, safety goes off if you have one, Handgun is raised higher into your line of sight, and pushing out toward target, trigger finger (firing hand index finger, if you haven’t figured this out yet?) starts to enter the trigger guard and the center of the first pad your index finger is placed in the center of the trigger and pulls the slack (free play of trigger) out. Now shift your focus from the target to the top of the front sight post AS the  sights are brought on target.. This is one of the biggest faults many shooters do not practice and their ability can only go so high.  Most often you cannot diagnose what is going wrong.  You MUST practice shifting the focus from the target to the top of the front sight post. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!  Shift your focus to the front sight and STAY on the front sight post! DO NOT SHIFT BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE TARGET AND FRONT SIGHT!
  • STEP 4 HANDGUN COMES TO REST AT FULL EXTENSION, Focus has moved from the target to your sights, front sight level with the rear sight with equal light passing on the right and left sides of the front sight post, (aligning your sights and eye focus SHOULD be happening between Step 3 and 4) closing your non-dominate eye and establish 100% focus on that front sight post.  You are ready to shoot!

At this stage, start your trigger press until the trigger “breaks”. (It should surprise you) With 100% focus on the FS post, it should NOT move when trigger breaks! Trap the trigger to the rear, simulating a “reset” while focusing on the front sight (follow-through) trigger finger goes straight along the frame, lower the handgun to about 45* as if following your target to the ground, and perform appropriate After-Action-Responses.

  • Handgun is in the ready position (In both hands, pointed low, about 45* angle) RESET your trigger by racking the slide and releasing it.
  • Return to holster in the reverse order, from the ready position, move through STEP 3 to STEP 2, and PAUSE.  Look around to make sure you are ready to re-holster. The muzzle should be point straight out, down range towards your target.
  • Move from STEP 2 to STEP 1 (re-holster carefully)

DO AS MANY REPETITIONS THAT YOU CAN WHILE REMAINING 100% FOCUSED ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING. IF NOT, STOP! Dry Practice only when you can focus 100% on the exercise and stop when interrupted or tired. Do not ingrain bad habits by getting SLOPPY. Do it perfectly on each reputation to ingrain it into muscle memory.  It will PAY huge dividends in your skill level.

Next is adding movement, see you after a few thousand dry presentations. and a thousand live rounds for validation.  Example, dry practice 30 presentations 5 days week, the shoot 50 rounds. Immediately after the 30-5o rounds end it with 30 more dry presentations. Rest 7th day. Start all over the next week. After 5 months of this, then move onto the advanced programs.  If you want to learn faster do more sooner.  Do two- a days, 30 in the am and 30 in the pm and 60-100 rounds on the 6th day. The in 2.5 months you will be ready to move on.

* REMEMBER, it is OK to cheat in a fight, we actually applaud you for it.  But NEVER cheat yourself in training or practice. DRY PRACTICE IS THE SKILL BUILDER!

Tom Clarke ATAC TV Firearm Viewers Question: Why Should I Under Load my Magazines?

Monday, November 21st, 2011

When the ATAC Guy’s Tom Clarke and Lenny Bolton tell most people they should under load their magazines, they wonder why? If the magazine holds 15, why on earth would you short yourself a round or two by not filling it up? There are a few valid reasons to avoid topping off that magazine.

There is just so much room inside the magazine body and if loaded to capacity, once the last cartridge loaded under the feed lips, the spring, follower and cartridges are tight with little room to move around inside the body. Insert this magazine into a firearm with its bolt closed and the top cartridge will hit the bottom of the bolt. If the cartridge can not move down slightly into the body, there is a strong possibility that you will not get the magazine seated correctly into the magazine well. Guess what? You will induce a malfunction, or worse, the magazine will fall out and you will end up with an empty firearm.

Another good reason to under load your magazines depends on the type and quality of the spring inside the body. Fully loaded, the spring is compressed to its limit in the bottom of the body. If left in this condition, depending on the type of spring, it could rapidly lose its flexibility and create malfunctions. A better technique is to leave some room for the spring to retain its shape, and allowing the follower and cartridges to move inside the magazine when loaded into a mag well against a bolt, will give you the best of both worlds. Reliable magazines and the ability to load into your firearm without thought of the condition or readiness of the firearm. For more details on this subject, watch the video program linked below so Tom and Lenny can explain in more detail.

What is a Mercenary? Mercenary – How to Become One

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

What is a Mercenary? A mercenary is a person who takes part in an armed conflict, who is not a national or a party to the conflict, and is “motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party” .
Source: Here

1. A mercenary shall not have the right to be a combatant or a prisoner of war.
2. A mercenary is any person who:
(a) is especially recruited locally or abroad in order to fight in an armed conflict;
(b) does, in fact, take a direct part in the hostilities;
(c) is motivated to take part in the hostilities essentially by the desire for private gain and, in fact, is promised, by or on behalf of a Party to the conflict, material compensation substantially in excess of that promised or paid to combatants of similar ranks and functions in the armed forces of that Party;
(d) is neither a national of a Party to the conflict nor a resident of territory controlled by a Party to the conflict;
(e) is not a member of the armed forces of a Party to the conflict; and
(f) has not been sent by a State which is not a Party to the conflict on official duty as a member of its armed forces.

So. Basically, you don’t have any normal POW rights if you’re only doing it for the money. We’re just letting you know up front.

Becoming a Mercenary – The Why’s

- First up, what will matter most to a lot of people; it’s good money. It’s very good money, in many cases, simply because you put your life and limb on the line fighting someone else’s cause. You fight, they pay.

- Action. Believe it or not, this point competes for first place in surveys among mercenaries. Some of them want the adrenaline rush, some just miss their time in prior military service, and some don’t think they got to see enough “action” in their regular military service. If this is what you’re after, that’s fine, you’ll probably get all the action you can handle, but you still need to be careful – adrenaline can actually be had without you dying or getting injured, so don’t take unnecessary risk.

- Flight. It used to be that anyone could run away, become a mercenary, make some money and settle somewhere else as someone else, never to be seen or heard from again. That (mostly) isn’t so any more. Mercenaries are corporate resources now, with HR departments keeping tabs on taxes and addresses and all that paperwork. There’s one option though – we’ll get to that.

- Training. There are better ways to further your military training, get certified for equipment or operations, or develop your inner being, for that matter. Being a mercenary is still frowned upon by many, and having it on your CV might do as much harm as good. Still, it will look awesome to the right people, so don’t turn the idea down just because of this.

- Adventure.This point might have come under the “Action” point, but we thought we’d give it a bullet of its very own even so. If you’ve wanted to wade through jungle marshes, fight crocodiles or see the very worst of the worst of the earth’s deserts, mercenary life might be for you. At least you won’t have to pay for your plane ticket. Or your B&B.

Getting in shape is imperative. In most cases, you will need to meet strict requirements and complete rigorous test in order to be accepted in military institutions, law enforcement agencies, and as a mercenary. You will need to be able to show off, brag about yourself and then be able to back it up with your physique. A boot-camp style training regime is recommended.

Getting in shape doesn’t just mean your body. It means your head as well. You will need to train your head just as much as your body, getting in the mindset of what you are about to do, what your goal is and what you are getting yourself into. A mercenary is a soldier, granted, a soldier of fortune, so to speak, but a soldier none the less. Going to war, and doing it for other reasons than personal conviction is hard, and you may even need to see a coach or a “shrink” in order to make sure you’re bolted together right before you try out for any of the mental exams you might face.

There is another way to get the training and experience needed, but it’s going to take time, and it might be expensive for you. We’re talking about paying your own way through training, for example at Blackwater.  This can be a good way to go if you have the money, and it might open doors at the company you train with, if you make an impression. That also takes some preparation, of course, but hey. It’s what you want to do, right?

By the way, there’s also Global Dynamics (not the same  as in the TV-Show, but almost…) and Triple Canopy. Now, we don’t vouch for any of these, because there are a lot of unsavory and amateurish companies out there, claiming to be the best of the best of the best – just look at iKey Solutions, for example – we’ve written about them before.

The Kepi Blancs (the White Kepis) are some of the world’s most dedicated, fierce and daring soldiers, but also some of the most secret ones. They’ve made many first strikes unknown to most, among them Bosnia and the first Gulf War – that’s right – the French were some of the first into that one.
A normal term of service is five years, at the end of which you will be provided with the opportunity of having a French passport, a new name and quite a bit of cash burning holes in your pockets. Their standards are high, and their level of insanity, according to many, is even higher, with rigorous training that frequently involves abuse of the recruits – as one ex-FFL officer told us; “If they don’t understand, I would hold their head under water, and when they came back up, they understood”. They have a forced language training (see, this is why we’ve emphasized French all throughout the page – they speak nothing else), and a higher number of training casualties than many other military organizations.
If you want to be a mercenary, you may well start there. Save up the cash, go to France and show up at their recruiting office. They’ll take good care of you. After a five-year term with them, there’s not a mercenary corp in the world that wouldn’t have you. A tip? Aim for the “2nd Rep”…

NEVADA SHERIFFS AND CHIEFS DELAY VOTE ON MAJOR CCW REFORM

Monday, August 8th, 2011

During its annual meeting last month, the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association tabled a motion that would have authorized the group’s representatives to send a letter to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) asking them to re-instate the instant background check exemption for Nevada concealed carry weapons (CCW) permit holders. During the 2011 legislative session, the Nevada legislature passed Assembly Bill 282, which requires a background check on CCW permit renewals. AB 282 was signed into law by Governor Brian Sandoval on June 17.

According to those who attended last month’s meeting, the “vote to authorize a formal letter” was delayed until the September 17 meeting in Fallon so the sheriffs could “evaluate the impact the NICS exemption would have on their agencies.”

This lack of action on the part of the sheriffs is extremely troubling as Nevada’s CCW permit holders have been eagerly anticipating the renewal of the NICS exemption, and state legislators who voted to support AB 282 did so with the understanding that this was a top priority for the Department of Public Safety and the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association. In fact, enactment of the provisions in AB 282 took effect on July 1 for the purpose of “fast-tracking” the application for exemption to BATFE.

If the formal letter from the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association to BATFE requesting the re-instatement of the NICS exemption is not sent soon, Nevada’s CCW permit holders are subject to months of additional background check fees on firearm purchases.

Please politely contact your county Sheriff NOW and ask him to move forward with the request to BATFE without delay and without an unnecessary vote. The only vote that counted was the overwhelming mandate from the Nevada Legislature and Governor Sandoval enacting AB 282! Contact information for your county Sheriff is below:
